ACCORD
Des plus (+ adjectif). S'il se rapporte à un nom, l'adjectif est au pluriel : c'est une personne des plus brillantes (= parmi les plus brillantes). S'il se rapporte à un verbe ou à un sujet neutre, l'adjectif reste invariable : il n'est pas des plus facile d'arrêter de fumer.
remarque Certains grammairiens, voyant en des plus un superlatif, sans idée de pluriel, ont préconisé une personne des plus brillante, sans s (= une personne brillante au plus haut point). Cette règle peu logique n'est plus suivie de nos jours.
Le plus (+ adjectif ou participe) : accord de l'article. En règle générale, l'article s'accorde lorsqu'il y a comparaison (superlatif relatif) : ces œuvres sont les plus précieuses de la collection (= plus précieuses que toutes les autres œuvres) ; votre idée est la plus astucieuse (= plus astucieuse que toutes les autres idées). L'article reste invariable lorsque la notion exprimée est celle de degré extrême, sans comparaison (superlatif absolu) : c'est toujours dans ces moments-là qu'elle se montre le plus courageuse.
remarque La distinction n'est pas toujours facile à établir et, dans certains cas, l'accord se fait ou non sans changement appréciable de sens : les comédiens qui ont été les plus acclamés ou le plus acclamés.
Plus d'un (+ nom au singulier). Le verbe est au singulier (il y en a plus d'un qui vous le confirmera), sauf s'il exprime la réciprocité : plus d'un concurrent se regardaient à la dérobée.
Plus d'un (+ nom au pluriel).
L'accord du verbe est facultatif : plus d'un de ses ennemis avait (ou avaient) juré sa perte.
Noter que l'accord avec moins de deux se fait au pluriel → moins.
Plus que, pas plus que. Quand deux sujets sont liés par plus que, pas plus que, le verbe s'accorde seulement avec le premier sujet : sa mère, plus que son père, tenait à ce qu'il fasse des études ; le chien, pas plus que le chat, n'est autorisé à entrer dans la maison.
CONSTRUCTION
Des plus (+ deux adjectifs). Lorsque des plus précède deux adjectifs, il n'est pas nécessaire de le répéter : une nourriture des plus délicates et savoureuses. Toutefois, la répétition (une nourriture des plus délicates et des plus savoureuses) n'est pas incorrecte.
Le plus que (+ indicatif ou subjonctif) : la plus grande hauteur qu'il peut franchir ou qu'il puisse franchir à la perche. Le subjonctif est plus fréquent.
Plus que dans une comparaison où figurent deux verbes. Quand le verbe employé comme deuxième terme de la comparaison est conjugué, il est nécessairement précédé de ne : il fait plus qu'il ne dit. Mais : il fait plus que parler. → plutôt
EMPLOI
Plus que / plus de. Avec à demi, à moitié, aux trois quarts, etc., on emploie en général plus que : une bouteille plus qu'aux trois quarts vidée.
remarque Plus de n'est pas incorrect dans ce cas, mais paraît aujourd'hui vieilli : une page plus d'à moitié écrite.
Devant une quantité dénombrable, on emploie toujours plus de : il y a plus de cent voyageurs par voiture.
De plus / en plus. De plus (= d'ailleurs, en outre) renchérit sur ce qui vient d'être dit : cette robe vous va bien, de plus, elle vous fera de l'usage. En plus (= aussi, par-dessus le marché) indique que qqch vient en complément : elle m'a indiqué le chemin, en plus elle m'a donné un plan.
