« It's not true that I was an actor before I was a musician. I've been a musician a long time. And to supplement the wages of the Police in the early days, which were pretty scant, I used to do modelling jobs and acting, anything actually that would make money. So rather than go and work in a factory and break the band up, we all managed to do things that we could do part-time and keep the band going. A sort of supplement to the group. So we never in fact prostituted the group, we prostituted ourselves… Basically the punk explosion of '76 was a very exciting time, Stuart [Copeland] and I got to know each other during that time and were inspired by that particular excitement that was going on and formed the Police. Although we weren't exactly punks, we've always been by association close to that movement. »
