VERSAILLES

France's greatest palace, by Le Vau and Mansart, with gardens by Le Nôtre. Built at enormous cost by Louis XIV and added to in the 18th century, it was the home of the French court until the Revolution. Numerous treaties were signed there, including the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 marking the end of the First World War.
