Fotograf is a false friend because it refers to the person holding the camera the photographer rather than the photo itself. (N.B. a female photographer is eine Fotografin not eine Fotogräfin!)
The English word photograph is usually translated by Fotografie or Aufnahme. So to ask someone if you can take their photograph, you might say Darf ich ein Foto von dir machen?

In Germany, people see in the New Year by letting off a firework when midnight chimes. Another tradition, called Bleigießen, is to pour a small amount of molten lead into a bowl of cold water. It is supposedly possible to tell your fortune for the coming year from the shape of the solidified lead.
