| Although many indigenous languages were (and still are) spoken in what was to become Mexico and Central America at the time of the Spanish conquest, it was Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, which the Spaniards adopted as a lingua franca. This has helped to ensure the survival of the language in better health than others, and has also meant that many of its words entered the vocabulary of Spanish, and through it other languages. In English, for example, we find “tomato” and “chocolate”. There are still over one and a half million speakers of its various dialects in Mexico today. |
