This palace in Madrid is the residence of the Spanish premier. It was here that the “Pactos de la Moncloa”, economic and social agreements which formed the basis of the transition to democracy, were drawn up and signed by the main Spanish political parties, including the recently legalized Communists and Socialists, in 1977. By extension, la Moncloa is used to refer to the Spanish government: “según fuentes de la Moncloa...” according to government sources...
