Karneval
The biggest Karneval celebrations take place in the Rhineland (Cologne, Düsseldorf and Mainz), although the tradition is also associated with Bavaria (where it is known as Fasching) and Swabia (where it is known as Fasenacht or Fasnet). The Karneval period officially begins at eleven minutes past eleven on the 11th November and ends on Ash Wednesday. On the Monday before Ash Wednesday ( Rosenmontag), there are processions with floats carrying figures that caricature social and political life.
